New EMS Software Product to Provide Comprehensive Academic Scheduling for Higher
Education Institutions
Customers to Participate in Design, Testing of New System
DENVER -- Dean Evans & Associates (www.dea.com)
today announced its plan to develop a new product that offers both the comprehensive
academic scheduling capability needed by registrar's offices and the room and resource
scheduling functions utilized by other campus entities. Since sharing the project
timeline in an email to its customers, and extending an invitation to EMS users
to participate in the design and testing of the new product, the company has had
more than 50 organizations express an interest in providing input.
"We've always relied on collaboration between our programmers and our customers
in order to develop products that not only utilize the latest technology, but also
incorporate the best ideas," says company president Dean Evans. "With a project
of this scale -- one that will impact everyone from the registrar to facility managers
to meeting and event schedulers -- we felt it was absolutely essential to involve
the user community right from the start. And we're very pleased with the enthusiastic
response we've received."
Among the features that the academic scheduling product will offer are the ability
to automatically assign and optimize room use for classes, track course-specific
information by academic term, facilitate the planning process for future terms,
enhance and simplify communications between departments and the central registrar,
verify the availability of instructors and offer a two-way interface between EMS
and an institution's administrative and student information system.
"Already there are a fair number of schools that schedule some or all of their classes
using EMS," says Scott Anderson, director of the company's technical consulting
group. "But the academic scheduling product will streamline that somewhat labor-intensive
process and make it very efficient. Add that functionality to our products' time-tested
meeting and event management capability and you have a system that can handle virtually
any campus scheduling task."
"Requirements gathering" is currently underway, with conference calls between the
EMS development team and customers taking place on a regular basis. The company
anticipates that the design and development phase for the new product will last
through the end of 2005, with the system being tested and ready to ship in mid-2006."
